Course Description

Case Management is a widely practiced function across multiple disciplines including child welfare, gerontology, mental and behavioral health services, corrections, poverty programs, disabilities, vocational training, etc. Due to diminished organizational resources many case managers lack the appropriate training to effectively engage with challenging clients.

This training is designed to provide content that will assist case managers who work with a variety of client groups improve and/or enhance their effectiveness in the provision of client services. The Case Management Training is designed as a resource to assist social workers/case managers with offering qualitative case management services to clients that align with the mission and philosophy of their organizations and the core values and principles of social work practice. The training and implementation of these core competencies represents the field’s commitment to continuous quality improvement aimed at maximizing outcomes for clients who receive services within social service settings. This 4 hour session will introduce the 6 Components of Case Management (Assessment/Reassessment, Case Planning, Service Provision, Referrals, Documentation, Closure) and will offer trainees an opportunity to practice each of the components using live case scenarios, experiential and group activities.

Name/Qualifications of Presenter

Shawnee Benton Gibson, LMSW, FDLC is a graduate of New York University’s Silver School of Social Work and a licensed social worker with over 23 years of experience in the field of social services. Her areas of expertise include but are not limited to, chemical abuse and dependence, mental health, child welfare, adolescent development, women’s reproductive health, trauma, grief and bereavement as well as individual, group and family coaching and counseling. Shawnee also has extensive experience in program assessment, evaluation, design and oversight as well as and leadership development. In addition to her clinical acumen, Shawnee designs and facilitates training curriculum, workshops, seminars and conferences for groups and organizations utilizing  action oriented and experiential methodologies,  such as sociometry and psychodrama, to enhance personal and professional skills, explore  leadership styles, strengthen interpersonal and communication skills and create structures for individuals to fulfill on their personal and professional goals and visions.

Teaching Methodologies

Utilizing the principles of adult learning theory as the foundation of the instructional design and delivery of the course, participants will be guided through a series of tiered, interactive, small and large group activities/tasks that support the material covered and skills taught during the course. Participants will be engaged in activities that foster creativity, acknowledge the individual and collective wisdom of the attendees and that are directly correlated with course material. Course work and activities will also represent what participants will utilize in their current role and responsibilities in the field of social work/case management.
